All about the UN CBD Fungal Conservation Pledge
At the 2024 UN Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) COP16, the governments of Chile and the United Kingdom, in collaboration with the Fungi Foundation, launched the Fungal Conservation Pledge — a groundbreaking step toward securing a future for fungi. This global initiative calls on governments to:"Recognise fungi as an independent kingdom of life in national and international legislation, policies and agreements, in order to advance their conservation and to adopt concrete measures that allow for maintaining their benefits to ecosystems and people in the context of the triple environmental crisis." Already signed by 13 countries, this pledge represents a growing movement to include fungi in environmental decision-making on equal footing with animals and plants.
We are working to gather more international support for the pledge so it can be formally adopted at the next UN Biodiversity Conference (COP17) in Yerevan, Armenia (2026).
If you're a policymaker, conservationist, researcher, or simply a fungi enthusiast — we invite you to join the movement.
