The fungi kingdom is gaining ground in the educational sphere! Over the past two months, as Fundación Fungi we have rolled out an intensive campaign to promote the use of the mycological educational resources we have developed for teachers. From Santiago to Puerto Montt, we have been sharing knowledge about this fascinating kingdom, reaching new audiences and leaving a lasting educational footprint.

During this autumn, we carried out 8 training sessions in various locations such as Santiago, Pucón, Río Blanco and Concepción, and we will soon be heading to Villa Alemana and Valdivia. This expansion is not only geographical, but also in terms of impact. With more than 60 professionals, students and experts from the educational, scientific and artistic fields taking part in our training sessions and talks, we are leaving the spores of mycological knowledge in diverse communities.

One of the most rewarding experiences has been our collaboration with local festivals and educational activities. These partnerships have not only enabled us to reach our target audience, but have also created valuable networks for the ongoing dissemination of our educational initiatives. The Festival Reino Fungi de Pucón has been a particularly important ally, and this year, for the third consecutive year, we have contributed through our presence and support, including the donation of 11 Field Guides: Hongos de Chile Vol. 1 and 2 to enrich local libraries and classrooms in the region.

Talk: “Funga: the third F they never told you about and you should know about.”

One of our objectives is to nurture educational communities. For this reason, we have donated guides to various public and private school libraries in order to support the use of our educational keepsakes. This year, we delivered our field guides to the libraries of La Protectora de la Infancia, ensuring that our educational legacy extends beyond the classroom.

Behind every activity and training session there is a committed, passionate team, led by our Programme Coordinator and head of the office in Chile, Daniela Torres.

During this fruitful autumn, he gave talks and training sessions in places such as Río Blanco in the Los Lagos Region, as part of the first mushroom festival in the Chamiza Valley; he also ran a workshop in Llanquihue National Reserve and an exciting talk at La Protectora de la Infancia in Santiago, where more than 250 children and adolescents were inspired by the magic of the fungal kingdom, together with the striking images and timelapses from our collaborators Planet Fungi.

Teacher training, held at the Museo Interactivo Mirador.

In parallel, we took part in school intervention initiatives such as the one carried out at Colegio San Constantino, thanks to a collaboration with Fundación Colorearte. These instances show how art and science can work together to enrich students’ educational experience. On this occasion, we carried out two activities proposed in our educational plan for Years 3, 4 and 5 of primary school.

Our commitment to education goes beyond the classroom. Through talks at festivals and cultural events such as the Feria Kallampa and Cultural Heritage Day at the Museo Interactivo Mirador, we are bringing knowledge about the fungi kingdom to new audiences and promoting the importance of its study and conservation.

Our education programme is experiencing strong growth and expansion, and with each activity, talk and collaboration, we are instilling awareness of the fascinating world of fungi. Join us on this exciting educational journey!
