In February, at Fundación Fungi we took part in the Brazilian Congress of Mycology in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, with a presentation entitled “Mycological curriculum: sparking curiosity and cultivating wonder in boys and girls with freely accessible learning resources”.

Daniela Torres, office and programmes manager at Fundación Fungi, was responsible for officially launching the mycological curriculum in its Portuguese version. On this occasion, she was accompanied by Dr.Maria Alice Nevesand Dr.Larissa Trierveiler Pereiraboth Brazilian mycologists who collaborated on the translation of the “Hongos Fantásticos” curriculum.

We provide information on the results of more than 10 years of work in Chile and the progress made on a study programme aligned with educational standards in the United States.

The fact that fungi are scarcely represented in education is a reality that transcends borders. In Chile, mentions of fungi in educational curricula are far below mentions of their counterparts, such as plants and animals. The same happens with the educational standards in the United States, the NGSS (Next Generation Sciencie Standard, according to its acronym in English).

Although no review of the educational materials in Brazil has been carried out, one of the challenges the specialists faced when adapting this educational plan into its Portuguese version was the lack of available mycological educational material. “When I was looking”instructions on the internetabout how to make a spore print as a suggested activity in Fundación Fungi’s mycological curriculum, “I didn’t find any educational material in Portuguese. That encouraged me”to domy ownmaterial“on this subject,” mentions Dr Trierveiler during the presentation at the 10th Brazilian Congress of Mycology.

Currently, more than 120 people have already accessed our educational resources, including the mycological curriculum in Portuguese. We continue to make progress in our mission to encourage more educators in Brazil to include fungi in their classrooms.
